Why Sauvignon Blanc? The name came from the French word sauvage meaning wild because aeons ago the vines used to grow wild in the South of France. Even though it’s super popular now, it’s still wild at heart.

Known for its citrusy, zesty tropical fruit and tangy zing, it’s an unmistakable taste. Wine reviewers talk about herbs and fresh cut grass but that’s a bit too tame for my liking. I would say dancing barefoot on the lawn at midnight personally.

Why Pinot Grigio? It’s a twin to Pinot Noir (in fact they share nearly identical DNA) but the Grigio sibling has grapes that are a greenie grey colour. They don’t know how this happened so let’s just put it down to a happy freak of nature.

With hints of apple, pear and charming flashes of almond and honey, Pinot Grigio is the equivalent of easy listening on the radio-it’s classic, approachable and it’s not going to upset sensibilities (unless you’re a metal head).

Why Merlot? It comes from an old French word for a young blackbird. It probably got this name because its grapes are a deep, inky bluey black. Merlot is one of the most popular red wine styles in the world - if it was a band it would fill stadiums. It has a huge fanbase because it’s soft and fruity and really, really easy to drink.

Close your eyes when you take a sip and taste the berries and plums. Nothing hard with this one. So delicious and easy it’s the wine equivalent of an elastic waistband.

Why Shiraz? There is actually a city in Iran called Shiraz and legend has it that a traveller bought the first grapes to France as long ago as 600 B.C.- amazing hey? The Shiraz grape is very small but don’t be fooled - they may be teeny but they are serious flavourbombs.

This wine is jam-packed with berries and fruit. People have been mad enough to swear they can also taste chocolate, espresso even black pepper - but let’s not overthink it. It’s big. It’s bold. It’s beautiful.

Why Cabernet Sauvignon? This has always been a bit of mystery because no-one really knows where the name came from. Rumours abound that a wine like cabernet was around in Roman times but this may just be idle gossip. It’s hard to really pin this guy down as Cabernet is an utter paradox. From super mysterious origins, it’s now Mr Popularity and the most planted grape in the world.

It’s lean yet fruity. It’s delicious young but just keeps getting better and better with age. How many people can say that?
